New Driving Requirements

by Randall Klooz

January 10, 2008

Because of new driving regulations Nebraska teens could be a little safer starting Jan. 1,2008.

Last June, lawmakers made changes to the state's graduated driver's licensing rules and they take effect in January.

In order for a 16 year-old to get a Provisional Operators Permit -- or POP -- drivers will need to hold a learners permit for at least six months and have not accumulated three or more points on their driving record during the six month period immediately preceding the POP application date.

After getting the POP the driver can only have one passenger under the age of 19 for the first six months. Family members are exempt from this rule.

The holder of any type of learners permit or POP shall not use any type of interactive wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle.  Interactive wireless communication device means any wireless electronic communication between two or more parties, including, but not limited to, a mobile or cellular phone, a text messaging device, a personal digital assistant that sends or receives messages, an audio-video player that sends or receives messages, or a laptop computer.

More Information can be gotten from http://www.dmv.state.ne.us/examining/overview.html  for all of the beginning license requirements.
