Local Scholarships

 

Plainview American Legion Nurses Education Fund:  $400.  For RN or LPN training only.  For any accredited nursing college. See Mr. Klein for application. Deadline is April 1.

 

Roger D. Hanneman Memorial:  $200.  For any college.  The senior must have participated in music (band/vocal), drama or athletics for four years. GPA and financial aid are also a factor. Must write an essay on the following subject: How have extra-curricular activities had a positive impact on your life? Deadline is April 15.

 

Plainview Chamber of Commerce:  $500.  Can be used at any accredited vocational program, community college, four-year college, or university. Deadline is April 15.

 

Plainview Professional Education Association (PPEA): $350.   Scholarships will be awarded based on academic ability, character, and an essay.    Deadline is April 15.

 

Plainview Area Health Systems:  $500.  Awarded to a senior who plans on pursuing a career in the health field.  Student may attend a vocational program, community college, or 4-year college/university.  GPA, class rank, school and community activities and achievements considered.  Also, 3 letters of recommendation and an essay required.  Deadline is April 4.

 

Masonic Lodge 204:  $150.  Based on citizenship and community service.  Deadline  is April 15.

 

Plainview Community Theatre: At least $200.  Must be a band/vocal, art, or speech and drama student or any of these for a minimum of 3 years.  Financial need is not a factor.  Requires an essay regarding the benefits of being involved in fine arts.  You must also include a resume of your fine art involvement.   Deadline is April 20.

 

The Jim B. and Lillian F. Cooper Foundation:  $1500.  Available to a graduating senior. One alternate will be selected if the event the winner does not use the scholarship.  Deadline is April 12

 

Lloyd and Viola Johnson Memorial Scholarship:$250.  First consideration given to a student planning to make production agriculture a career after college graduation--Other majors also considered—Essay (500 words), and a resume listing two references are required.  Due to Mr. Klein by April 1.

 

Beth Lingenfelter Putnam Scholarship: $100 renewable for satisfactory progress (3.0 GPA) while attending Northeast Community College.  Due April 15.

 

P.E.O.Marian E. Brunke Memorial Scholarship: $400.  Requires an essay.  Preference given to a candidate pursuing a degree in music or education.  Due April 10.

 

PPEA/PHSA Scholarship @ the University of  Nebraska—Kearney $400.    Due April 15.

 

PPEA/Plainview Alumni Scholarship at Northeast Community College. $300. Based on academic ability, character, and an essay.  Due April 15.

 

Nebraska Grand Chapter- Order of Eastern Star Scholarship- One scholarship at $ 250. Due April 1.

 

Gerald Hanks Memorial Scholarship- 1 @ $1000 or 2 @ $500. Due April 25.

 

FFA Boosters Scholarship- 4 scholarships @ $250 each. For current FFA members who

are planning to attend a two or four year college.  Due April 1.

 

Wayne State College Scholarships-

Rose&Nola Peterson Family Scholarship    $245

Joyce J. (Pilger) Windeshausen/Plainview Community Scholarship   $975

Scholarships for 2008

 

JO-DE-RA CAVALIERS unit of Omaha Tangier Shrine Center presents a $2000 scholarship available to a high school senior who is a member of a Masonic Youth Organization- Entries due April 1, 2008. See Mr. Klein for details.

Monsanto Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship-  $100- $1500 scholarships awarded. Must be a high school senior from a farm family and plan to enroll in an agriculture related academic major. FFA membership is not required. Submit online application at www.monsanto.com or http://scholarships.ffa.org along with a signature page. Due Feb 15, 2008.

Dekalb Ag Youth Scholarship- $2500 (10 awarded) Must pursue an agriculture related degree and demonstrate strong leadership skills and community involvement- FFA membership not required- Submit online at www.dekalbwingwear.com or http://scholarships.ffa.org along with a signature page. Due Feb 15, 2008.

Ag. Cooperative Safety Directors of Nebraska Scholarship- $500 (2 awarded) Must have a 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in an agricultural program. One letter of recommendation and an essay are required. Due Feb. 15, 2008.

Collegeof Business Administrationat the University of Nebraska at Omaha- Go to http://cba.unomaha.edu – Click on the “students” icon on the toolbar. Due Feb 15. 2008.

Antelope/Holt County Corn Growers Association Scholarship- $500 Must have a home address from antelope or Holt County. Must enroll in an agriculture related program of study. Due March 28, 2008.

Nebraska Roping Horse Association is offering theRay Warren/ Tom Forst Memorial Scholarship-  $500 must be in the upper ¼ of the class and a minimum of a 26 ACT score. Three letters of recommendation-Essay- Due Feb. 28, 2008.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship- $1500 (up to 40 scholarships awarded) Minimum 30 ACT- go to www.nde.state.ne.us/byrd to apply. Due March 15, 2008.

Nebraska Coaches Association Scholarship- $500 (8 awarded) For students in the top 25% of their class who have participated in two sports for at least two years, and lettered in two sports. One letter of recommendation is required from high school coach. Minimum 24 ACT Due April 1, 2008.

OmahaArchdiocesan Council of Catholic Women Scholarship- $500 - Awarded to a High School Senior Catholic woman. Submit an application form, transcript, and a priest evaluation. Essay is also required. Due by March 1, 2008.

Student of Integrity Award - $2000- Sponsored bye the Better Business Burea, Inc. The application includes an essay and letters of recommendation. Due Feb 15,2008.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarships- $2000 (up to 12 awarded) Must demonstrate ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family, and community, ability to succeed in college. Applications can be downloaded at www.axa-achievement.com Due by Feb. 15, 2008.

Gus Swanson Memorial Communication Scholarship- $500- Available to who plan to major in Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communications, Communication studies, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design/ Desktop Publishing. An application can be printed at www.sramarketing.com Due March 15, 2008.

Yankton Medical Clinic, P.C. Scholarship- $1000 (6 awarded) Must have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA and be pursuing a major in a medical field. Essay and three letters of recommendation are required. Due by March 31, 2008.

Chet Linder Memorial Scholarship- $750 For a major in business or business-related field. Due by March 1, 2008.

Husker Harvest Days Agricultural Scholarship- $600 (9 awarded) Must pursue in agriculture/ agribusiness. Plainview can submit only one application. Due by March 28, 2008.

Best Buy Scholarships- Good grades-Outstanding Community Service- Apply at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships  Apply by Feb. 15, 2008.

Omaha Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals is offering several $1000 Scholarships- For students pursuing careers in the computing related fields. Applications available at aitpomaha.org Due by April 4, 2008.

NebraskaSociety of Professional Engineers Scholarship- $1000 (1) $750 (1)Requires two letters of recommendation, an essay, and a 29 ACT in Math and English. Apply by Feb. 4, 2008.

Susan B. Buffet Foundation Scholarship- Up to $3,200 per semester for tuition and fees and up to $400 per semester for books.Must need financial aid in order to attend college. Must have applied for federal financial aid and received back the official printed SAR prior to April 10.Must include 2 letters of recommendation verifying your character, need, merit, and circumstances.

WayneState College- High SchoolArt Scholarship Competition- Must attend WSC and major in Art.Requires 2 letters of recommendation and a portfolio of your work. Due Feb. 25, 2008.

UN-Kearney- Performing Arts Scholarships- Music and scholarship auditions scheduled. Jan 25, Feb. 16, Feb. 22, and March 7-8 2008. Online application and audition information at www.unk.edu/acad/music

The American Legion Auxiliary is offering the following scholarships:

1.      National Presidents Scholarship

2.      Spirit of Youth Scholarship-(must be a Junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary)

                     Both Deadlines are March 1, 2008

3.      Roberta Marie Stretch Memorial Scholarship- preference give to former Nebraska Girls State

4.      Nurse’s Gift Tuition Scholarship

5.      Licensed Practical Nursing Scholarship

6.      Vocational-Technical Scholarship

7.      Ruby Paul Campaign Fund Scholarship

8.      Ruby Lorraine Paul Scholarship

9.      Averyl Elaine Keriakedes Memorial Scholarship- preference give to a female enrolling at UNL and majoring in social studies education.

A student may apply for only 1 of the Department (State) Scholarships

A student may apply for only 1 of the National Scholarships.

All the above scholarships require the applicant to be the son/daughter/grandson/grand daughter of a veteran who served in the Armed Forces during any major conflicts since World War I.

Maynard Jensen American Memorial Scholarship- Must be a direct descendant of a member of the American Legion or POW, MIA, KIA, or and deceased veteran.

SoutheastCommunity CollegeScholarships- $500- Applications must be complete the new on-line application and have their high school transcript sent by Feb. 1, 2008

Great PlainsCommunications Scholarships- Trade and Technical Scholarship- For students who plan to attend a trade or technical school in Nebraska- $750- Apply by March 1, 2008.

Cable Television Scholarship-For students working toward a degree who plan to return to their hometown to pursue a career. You must attend Chadron State to be eligible. Apply by March 1, 2008.

Robert C. Byrd Scholarships- $1500 per year minimum ACT composite score of 30. To access information online at www.nde.state.ne.us/byrd

.  Apply by March 15,2008.

Northeast Nebraska Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Scholarship- $500 Preference given to a candidate interested in courses of study in education, business/management/marketing/sales/ or actuarial science and who plan to attend a Nebraska college, University, or Community College. Applications must be returned on or before 5:00 February 15, 2008.

Nebraska Crop Improvement Association Scholarship Fund- To provide tuition assists to UNL agronomy students. Due March 15, 2008.

Nelnet Scholarship Giveaway Scholarships-$1000 Monthly drawings until August 2008. No ACT, No essay. Go to www.nelnet.com/winor mail in the application.

Oxbow Scholarship Program- $500 Given to a Nebraska High School Senior who has a strong interest in pursuing a career in the companion animal industry. Scholarships are paid directly to the school and will be credited to the student’s account in September. Complete the application online at www.oxbowhay.com. Provide a resume showing activities and job history. Applications must be turned in by March 10, 2008. Provide 2 letters of references. Submit a 300-500 word essay on one of the topics listed below.
