Husker Harvest Days for the Plainview FFA

Rebekah Beltz

September 14, 2012

The Plainview FFA took their annual trip to Husker Harvest Days on Wednesday, September 12. The group of 28 students and 2 sponsors, including Linda Demerath and Mr. Kment, met at the Ag shop at 5:30 a.m. eager and ready to go. On the way down most of kids slept; however, when we arrived at Grand Island everyone was wide-awake and ready to roam. To get through the gates, instead of paying, everyone brought 3-5 cans of food or more for a food donation to the Grand Island, Kearney, and Hasting’s food pantry; those donations were also matched by vendors at Husker Harvest Days. Once we got in, the group divided into smaller groups and was given assignments given to us by UNL to promote agricultural career pathways. Some exhibitors that were there were John Deere, Green Line, Case IH, Big Iron, Syngenta, Dodge dealers, Pioneer, and hundreds more. Even though the wind blew at 40 MPH, we managed to keep our feet on the ground with a lot of dirt on our faces.  Some of the students were so intrigued by all of the new technology in the tractors and in the pick-ups. Kaleb Eichburger said,” It was intriguing to learn about all of the new technology.” Even Stephanie Sorensen said, “I learned about all the new ways windmill generators are helping people all through out Nebraska and other states.” Husker Harvest Days was closed early this year due to health hazards with the wind, so we all loaded up on the bus and headed home; younger members said they can’t wait to go back next year.
