4th & 5th Grade Science Class Visitors
Over the last few weeks the 4th and 5th graders have had several visitors to their science classroom. While the 5th graders were studying the heart, they had two different visitors come to share their expertise. The first visitor included Dr. David Johnson from Osmond who brought an elk heart to show the group. Not only did he talk about various things pertaining to the heart, but he also illustrated to the kids how and where to cut the heart, showed them the four chambers and then pointed out other signficant parts of the heart. I brought in a cow and pig heart to make a comparison in size to the elk. Steve MacGregor came a different day showing the students how a fish heart operates the same as any animal or human heart and pointed out many of the same parts, just smaller. He also took time to show the students various parts of the digestive system of a fish. Both presenters were enjoyed by all and gave the students a great insight to the "REAL THING" as they learned about the circulatory system.
The 4th graders just completed their electricity and magnet unit so REA from Creighton came in to talk about electrical safety and do a small demonstration showing how electricty travels from a power plant to our homes. Todd & Linda shared a video explaining different safety precautions. The demonstration was probably the favorite because students got to witness first hand how a person could get electricuted and what happens. The 4th graders asked serveral questions and then walked away with an electrical safety booklet and bag with other goodies.
