GIRLS GOLF DISTRICT
The Plainview girls golf season ended on Tuesday, October 6th at the Class C district tournament in Wayne. Playing in one of the over-all toughest districts, Plainview did not qualify anyone for state competition. West Point-Beemer won the district with 382 as they were led by Lacie Fox with 80. Norfolk Catholic-396 and Battle Creek-407 also qualified their teams. Plainview finished 10th with 527.
Devan Solomon was in contention for a district medal as she was in 6th place for a long time. Solomon played the back nine first and two holes gave her problems to give her a 58. Playing the front nine next, Solomon was able to record three pars and two bogies to record her low round of the year of 47. This total of 105 would have qualified her in most of the previous years. Elizabeth Kment continuing to show improvement the entire year played the back nine at 70 that included her first par of the year. Kment then shot 64 on the front nine to give her a 134 total. For both of these girls, this is their first year of competitive golf.
Sarah Watson struggled from the start on the back nine and shot 74. In playing the front nine, Watson had a 10 on #1 before she then played fairly consistent and recorded a 65. Sharyn Sheppard ended the team scoring with 149. With 5 double-digit holes and too many 9s, Sheppard had one of her highest scores of the year. Tabitha Johnston had her score of 165 not used in the team scoring. Johnston continues to play from tee to green in good shape but then strokes start accumulating. This is Johnston's first year of competitive golf.
Although, it was a tough year for the team the girls kept battling and improving. Their reply was often "I'm trying" so they knew what they had to concentrate on during the round. All of these girls except Sharyn Sheppard will return for another season and will be expected to greatly improve. Jadin Doerr and Jessica Stark will also return to help the team. This is only the fifth year of the eighteen years of girls golf that someone has not qualified.
