Early Childhood Education Program Addresses Community Childcare Shortage
Eight students from Plainview High School’s Early Childhood Education program have successfully completed their "Safe with You" certification, marking a significant step toward addressing the region's childcare provider shortage.
The students completed the state-required training under the guidance of Mrs. Jacobsen, a certified trainer. Those earning certification include Peighton Art, Kara Lingenfelter, Avery Hardisty, Katherine Enriquez, Ilyana Barron, Meleah Buck, and Nyome Harding. Additionally, Kaydance Maertins completed her certification through Northeast Community College's Introduction to Early Childhood Education Course with instructor Lisa Gunther.
The Safe With You curriculum fulfills Nebraska State Statute 43-2606 requirements, which mandate that licensed childcare providers complete training designed to meet the health, safety, and developmental needs of children. The comprehensive program includes critical information on sudden infant death syndrome, shaken baby syndrome, and child abuse prevention.
The training consists of three essential modules. "The ABCs of Safe Sleep" provides one hour of instruction on reducing Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) risks. "Never Shake a Child" educates providers about preventing Abusive Head Trauma, while "Power to Protect" offers two hours of training on child abuse prevention and response protocols.
The students will continue their professional development in December with "Active Supervision of Children" and "Prepare to Care" training sessions. They will also complete Pediatric First Aid CPR AED certification with Nurse Beth Ramold later this year.
This program directly responds to the local shortage of qualified childcare providers. Upon completion of all requirements, including background checks and fingerprinting, graduates will possess the necessary credentials to work in licensed childcare centers throughout Nebraska.
All certifications are maintained in the Nebraska Early Childhood Professional Record System (NECPRS), ensuring proper documentation of professional qualifications.
The program represents Plainview High School's commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers while serving the community's youngest residents.
