Pirates Take Down Top Ranked Trojans

by Joe Anderson

September 08, 2008

The last time Wakefield lost a football game was three years ago. That was to the Pirates as Plainview went on to win the C-2 crown. Since then, Wakefield has won 26 games in a row and 2 state titles.  Those streaks came to a screeching halt as Plainview took down the Trojans 26-6.

The Pirate offense controlled the ball for nearly 35 of the 48 minutes, giving Wakefield's dangerous offense limited chances. Early in the game it looked like the Pirates were shooting themselves in the foot as several big plays were called back by penalties. However, the offense line dominated up front and the backs ran extremely hard. Darren Forbes led the ground attack with 141 yards, and Tyler Holton pounded out 74 yards including a touchdown. Trey Boyer adding a rushing touchdown, while going 6-12 through the air for 49 yards. Caden Alexander was his favorite target catching 4 balls for 43 yards.

Defensively the Pirates played extremely well. They caused six turnovers and held the explosive trojan offense to 174 total yards. The defense set the tone early and then put an exclamation mark on the game as Nathan Wragge picked up a fumbled and rumbled into the end zone.

The Pirates will need this kind of effort again this Friday as they entertain 1-0, Laurel-Concord. It will be homecoming this week at PHS.
