Relay for Life Contributions

FCCLA members are proud to report a total of $1,848.95 was collected for the inaugural Kids for Cures event promoted by the Norfolk Area Relay for Life team held during March. Plainview Public Schools placed fourth in the event by collecting $5.39 per student. All students Preschool-12 grade were included in the "per capita" total as FCCLA members wanted all involved in the collection process to be recognized. "We were very excited to see the total we collected in just 2 1/2 weeks. With this being the first year for this event, it was the middle of March by the time our plans were made and put into action. We have high expectations for next year", stated chapter president Carissa Pollock.
A variety of events, correlated by FCCLA members, were held throughout the month beginning with a "Dressed for Relay" event where teachers paid to wear blue jeans for a day. Many elementary students/parents returned donation forms to "purchase" a luminary bag which will be decorated by elementary art students and displayed around the track at the Norfolk Area Relay for Life event held in June. Elementary students also held a "Change War" to see which classroom could raise the most money. Mrs. Porters 3rd grade class won by collecting a total of ___________ ; ________per student. They received a "Dirt and Worms" party compliments of FCCLA members and a can of pop donated by Pepsi of Norfolk. "Light the Hallway" was an easy way for high school students to participate as for each one dollar donation students could purchase a paper candle to be displayed in the hallway.
FFA members made a substantial contribution by collected $800 during their Relay for Life Tractor Parade.
The top three schools in the area were 1. St. Paul's collecting $2,910.00 ($35.48 per student) They earned a birthday bash, t-shirts, a traveling trophy, lunch and lots of media attention. A radio station will broadcast from the school that day and bring the t-shirt slinger. 2. Grant $2,113.00 ($19.93 per student) and 3. Lutheran High $2,504.00 ($15.949 per student).The top three schools will be recognized at the June 4 Relay event in Norfolk, and the students in the organizations spearheading the effort will all receive t-shirts. Other schools participating in the event were Battle Creek, Stanton, Neligh-Oakdale, Woodland Park, and Northern Hills. A total of $13,109.13 was collected by the 9 schools involved in the event.
