Plainview Invite Champions
The Plainview girls golf team won the Plainview Invite on Saturday, September 17. The last time that Plainview had won the Invite was in 2003. Rachel Sorensen was the medallist with a score of 101. The last time Plainview had a medallist in the Plainview Invite was in 2006 when Heather McCabe won. Although, Sorensen had only one par for the day, she kept herself out of trouble to record mostly bogies with a few other scores thrown in. Sorensen is getting longer off the tee while staying in the fairway. Briana Hamm followed with a 107 that earned her the 5th place medal. Hamm shot 56 on the front nine. Hamm was looking to record a very good score on the back nine until the last two holes caused her problems. Hamm still recorded a 51 that could have easily been in the forties on the back. Brittany White, while still contending with inexperience, shot 54-55 to earn the 8th place medal. White recorded 5 bogies on the back but her last two holes did her in. Stephanie Sorensen completed the scoring for the team with her 112. Sorensen shot her normal 52 on the front but had some unusual high numbers for her on the back nine. Sorensen has some back problems and the cooler weather does not help her. Kaytlyn Johnston was the last member of the varsity but her score was not used. Johnston has elevated her game to the point where she should experience a break-out round very soon. Johnston shot 134.
Since three schools that normally come to the Invite did not field a girlsâ golf team this year, a reserve division was added to the tournament. Plainview was the only team to have 5 reserves golfing so they were able to have a team score. Their team score on the back nine of 251 is the lowest of the year. Erika Neuman led the team with two very good scores of 59 and 61 to earn the silver medal in the reserve division. To indicate how well Neuman was playing she had an 11 on a hole during her 59. Morgan Johnston had a personal best score of 59 on the back nine after a 64 on the front to receive the bronze medal. Darian Bowers also recorded a personal best 59 on the back after a 67 on the front to earn the 4th place medal.
The girls are working hard to improve while still having fun. The Pirates must continue to improve as these schools will be in our conference and district. The team has not won conference since 2001 and this is also goal of theirs.
