Golfers Headed To State!
As the girlsâ golf team traveled to Wayne on October 4 for district competition, a big question was whether one very good golfer could put a team on her back and take them to state or whether a team with girls that were very close in their scores would win. The question was answered when Plainview was able to beat OâNeill 451-455 to take the third place team and qualify for state. The girls were able to keep their scores, except one, in the 50s to have balanced scoring. Wayne, the host team, and Norfolk Catholic battled it out for 1st and 2nd place with four strokes separating them also.
Brittany White continuing from her play on last Saturday at Oakland led the team with 50 on the front and 58 on the back. White was able to keep her scores on a hole 7 or below except for one par 5. Rachel Sorensen was not far behind with 54-57 as she also continued her good play from last Saturday. Sorensenâs inability to get off the tee kept her from scoring lower. Briana Hamm was able to keep all but one of her scores below 8 and shot 57-58. Hamm was playing great from tee to green but some putting let her down. Stephanie Sorensen finished the team scoring with 58-61. Sorensen played tentatively on some of the holes and this kept her from scoring lower as she normally does. Kaytlyn Johnston was the fifth golfer but her scores of 71-71 were not used. Johnston is another golfer who does a good job of getting from tee to green but her short game has not been mastered yet.
The girls will play next Monday, October 10th, and Tuesday, October 11th, at Quail Run in Columbus. Playing on a longer course as Wayne with some wind caused the scores of everyone to be higher than normal. When the girls match up in Columbus, they should be able to play with most of the teams.
