State Golf At Quail Run
The girls golf team traveled to Columbus to participate in the state meet on October 10 and October 11. The tournament was held at Quail Run golf course. Of the 15 teams qualifying, Plainview placed 11th. It was in 2003 when the last team qualified for state. However, Heather McCabe and Nicole Sorensen had both qualified as individuals twice in that span.
Brittany White led the team the first day with 50-52. This was a very good score as it included three 8s and a 9. This score enabled her to tee from the #1 tee on Tuesday. Stephanie Sorensen followed with 54-54. She played very well except for two holes that are trouble holes on the front. Briana Hamm, after a rough start on the first three holes, started to play steady golf and finished with 56-57. Rachel Sorensen who never found a rhythm on the front nine to shoot 65 played the back nine at 54. Kaytlyn Johnston had a par on the front nine but three of the first four holes kept her from scoring better to shoot 68. Johnston then scored the breakout game that had been predicted from her when she had a career low of 56.
On Tuesday, Briana Hamm led the team with 54-49. Hamm again started off slowly on the front but recovered to finish her career with a 49 on back. This helped keep the team in 11th as not all of the other girls were unable to match their first day scores. Brittany White shot 53 on the front with two 8s to hold her back. However, sand and chipping problems kept White from scoring lower on the back to shoot 59. White did finish the round with a par. This was a good showing for her only season of golf. Stephanie Sorensen then had her best round of the tournament with an opening 53 which included an 8 on the both the first and last holes. Sorensen then finished with 58 on the back. This is a good start for her freshman year of golf. As Sorensen learns to add some power off the tee, she will make some noise in the next three years. Rachel Sorensen who played some good holes but when she was unable to sustain this over the 18 holes as energy seemed to be a factor. Sorensen finished with an uncharacteristic score of 61-62. Kaytlyn Johnston continued her last round of Monday with a good score of 58. All but one score was either an 8 or a 5. Johnston then was on track on the back to again score low but a disastrous 12 on the 7th and an 8 on the 8th holes ballooned her score. Johnston did finish her career with a bogie on a very tough hole.
Rachel Sorensen, a junior, showed a lot of improvement from last year and along with sister Stephanie forms a good nucleus for next season with the returning reserves.
