FCCLA At Legislative Workshop Article and Video
Our advisor, Mrs. Jacobson, took two officers, Kelsey and Kirsten Cattell, from the Plainview FCCLA Chapter to Lincoln for the FCSTN Legislative Workshop on February 6th, 2012.
Watch a video of our day below!
To start the workshop off, we attended orientation where we discussed where to go and what we would be doing. Then Senator Kate Sullivan talked to us about how she became a senator, and how FCS focuses on current issues that we face like childhood obesity, credit card debt, and childcare. Next, Senator Greg Adams came and talked about how to pass a bill. Afterwards, we took a tour of the Capitol and then were led to the Legislative Chamber where we observed the legislature in action.
For lunch we walked to the Governor’s Mansion where we dined and discussed with our District 41 Senator Kate Sullivan about the importance of FCS in schools. “My favorite part of the day was listening to Senator Sullivan and her supportive views on FCS,” said Kirsten Cattell. Then we attended Legislative Committee Hearings such as Appropriations, Banking, Commerce and Insurance, the Business and Labor, the Education, and so forth. “Another enjoyable part of the day was talking to Senator Greg Adams who was very knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and informative about the way bills are passed.” Said Kelsey Cattell.
