GIRLS GOLF AT AINSWORTH
The 2017 girls golf team opened the season with an Invite at Ainsworth. The Pirates lost their top three scorers from the 2016 season so they are rebuilding. The Pirates did not fare very well as a team but there were several bright spots for the team as well as the individual girls to score better in the next meet. Elle Kment led the team with 64-63. Kment had three holes each round that gave her problems and kept her from scoring lower. These three holes are hard to play unless a person is familiar with the course. Tabby Johnston had 68-71. Johnston also had trouble with these same three holes. When almost half of your score comes from three holes, it is hard to score well. Both girls will continue to learn and lead the team.
Jessica Stark making her debut on the varsity for the first time shot 92-77. Stark was also frustrated by the same holes as everyone else but showed a lot of improvement on her second round. Becca Kment, played in her first meet as this is her first year out for golf, had 94-90. When considering that she had never played a full round of golf until the meet, she did very well. Kment had a bogey to make her day. Kayla Johnston had her scores of 103-93 not used. Johnston was another reserve from last year who had never played a full round from the regular tees. All three of these girls will continue to improve as the season progresses as this was their first full rounds of the year.
One of the reasons for playing in this Invite, is that they allow a team to bring two reserves. The reserves play under a modified scoring but play from the same tees as the varsity. Alexa Meyer shot 77-80 while Aaliyah Brown had 88-82. Neither girl had played golf before and they also had never played a full round of golf.
The team also impressed coach Knaak as they discussed what they observed about that their opponents did as they played.
The next meet is the West Holt Invite on Thursday, August 31 and then a home dual with Norfolk Catholic on Friday, September 1.
