Culinary 1 Tours Manor Kitchen
Culinary 1 students had the opportunity this Monday to tour Plainview’s Manor and Whispering Pine’s Assisted Living. Melissa Pellatz, Dietary Manager, provided a tour of the kitchen and its related areas while sharing her work responsibilities with the class. Pellatz, a 2016 graduate of Plainview High School, worked as a dietary aide at the manor while in high school and after graduation was asked to fill the position of Dietary Manager. As a former student of Foods, Nutrition and Wellness and Culinary, Pellatz explained how course content applies to her profession. Pellatz received her ServSafe Food Handler Certificate in High School, as did touring students, and explained during the tour how that information is used in her job. She “quizzed” students on temperatures required in different locations in the kitchen and adjacent areas, FIFO method, and storage of products in a variety of situations. Pellatz also explained the variety of duties she has as a manager which are not limited to preparing foods but also in creating the meal plans, ordering food, stocking shelves, creating work schedules, etc. A direct correlation to what was learned in nutrition, safety/sanitation, and food preparation was seen. Students appreciated seeing how course content is in used real work situations. Participating in the tour were Cassandra Mosel, Andrew Nelson, and Alicen Fischer along with teacher Ronita Jacobsen.
