FCCLA Attends District Leadership Conference
Plainview FCCLA members attended the District 8 Leadership
Conference Wed., Oct. 21st at the Lifelong Learning Center in
Norfolk, NE .
Milt and Janet Bemis were keynote speakers for the conference. “The
Gift of Life” keynote address focused on organ donation. The Bemis’
shared with FCCLA members how upon the death of their 2 ½ year old
son they were able to save the life of a 14 month old girl by
donating their son’s liver. This happened to be Nebraska first
liver donation years ago. Videos were shown throughout the
presentation of their son, current video of the donor and her
family, the creation of a float for the rose bowl parade, and a
video of the DirecTV presentation of Milt and Janet as
Hometown Heroes.
During the conference students were able to attend additional
sessions titled: Mandy Heckert with Turbo Kick, Jason Mrsny from
Wayne State College Campus Security on Internet Safety, FCCLA
Japanese Exchange Program with Crofton members Amanda and Sara
sharing their experiences, and State Officer Katie Clark presenting
“In Your Shoes”… with the focus on labeling students/peers.
Roundtable sessions presented by State FCCLA Officers and State
Peer Ed. Officers were also available. These topics included:
student body, families, first, financial fitness, and interior
design STAR Project.
During the opening ceremony Megan Robinson was installed as the district vice-president.
Shelby Forbes was recognized and received a certificate for completing all five Power of One Modules which include A Better You, Family Ties, Working on Working , Speak Out for FCCLA, and Take the Lead . She will also be recognized at the state leadership conference in April for her accomplishments.
Celine Eggerling competed in the creed speaking contest and received third place. She also presented her speech during closing session.
Asia Berg created the chapter yearbook which received fourth place.
Voting Delegate was local President Carissa Pollock. She attended the state officer interviews and speeches and led the chapter during chapter meeting time in casting the ballot for the district new state officer candidates.
Students also donated $25 to the district outreach project “Blue Jeans for Bucks”. The money collected at the district conference will be given to the Children’s Miracle Network.
Door prize winners were Kelsey Cattell, Brianna Hoffart, and Megan Robinson and the
themed basket winner was Kelsey Bonta.
