FCCLA Members Successful at State Leadership Conference
Eleven FCCLA Members attended the 2011 FCCLA State Leadership Conference and STAR Competition April 3-5 which was held in Lincoln at the Cornhusker Hotel and Pershing Auditorium. The theme for this year’s conference was FCCLA: PLAY (Promotion Leadership Among Youth) Up Your Possibilities. Attending from Plainview were members Carissa Pollock, Michaela Sirek, Jenni Ziegenbein, Kelsey Cattell, Sara Christiansen, Erika Neumann, Trelynn Morrow, Ashley Shaffer, Caiti Ziegenbein, Kirsten Cattell, and Natalie Lingenfelter, Advisor Ronita Jacobsen and Parent Rhonda Pollock. Monday kicked off with State STAR Presentations where Carissa Pollock competed in the Job Interview Event and Natalie Lingenfelter in the Chapter Showcase Event. During this time other members attending were able to tour UNL Stadium, the State Capitol, and view Exhibits and Chapter Spotlights Displays. Members also attended the session “DNT TXT N DRV” which was presented by the Brown Family who lost a child due to texting and driving. They now present nationwide educating students about the dangers of texting while driving. Additional presentations attended were “A Year of Maxwell FCCLA” and “Fun with FCCLA”. Participating in the FCCLA Quiz Bowl was Kirsten Cattell, Kelsey Cattell, and Ashley Shaffer.
Throughout the day on Monday the entire chapter was kept busy piloting the Otis Spunkmeyer Fundraising Program. Members used the table top oven, which bakes 2 dozen cookies at time, to bake and then serve fresh cookies to those willing to pay $1 for 2 cookies. $190 was collected and then donated to the Brown Family as they don’t charge a fee for their “DONT TXT N DRV” presentations.
Voting Delegate Kelsey Cattell, along with the rest of the chapter, attended the Phase III “Meet the Candidates” Regional Interviews conducted by District Advisor Mrs. Jacobsen. Cattell also attended a “Voting Delegate Training” where she was trained in the Parliamentary Procedure process. Cattell and other members also attended the Opening General Session/Meet the Candidates Assembly where a Bylaw change was voted on, state officers answered thought questions, and Power of One Awards were presented. Carissa Pollock received a certificate and pin for completing all five modules of Power of One.
During the Monday Night Evening General Session Carissa Pollock was recognized and awarded the FCCLA Non-FCS Major Scholarship. Patrick Grady gave the Keynote Address: Who Packs Your Parachute?” Following the general session all members chose to attend the hypnotist session “Leadership Can Be…Hypno-larious!”
Members were able to attend Tuesday sessions of “Dare to Be Different” by keynote speaker Patrick Grady; “Nobody’s Business” by Revolution which is a theatre dramatization, followed by a question and answer segment about the dangers of dating violence and sexual assault; “Leader’s for Life” which taught students leadership basics; “The Time of My Life” which gave an overview of a student perspective of the FCCLA Japanese exchange program; and “Misconceptions and Misinformation in Animal Agriculture” where students learned about the work of activist groups trying to change the way food is raised and the different ways the groups influence food decisions.
Kelsey Cattell, 2011-2012 Chapter President, and Mrs. Jacobsen attended the District Officer Leadership Seminar to focus on developing leadership skills, teamwork, and to begin making district plans for the next school year. Cattell also attended the “The Meeting Will Come to Order” Session which focused on developing presidential leadership skills. Jacobsen attended the Adviser Session where she presented “Fundraising by Otis Spunkmeyer” and gained information on marketing FCCLA and new ideas for chapter participation.
During the STAR Awards Session Carissa Pollock was announced as the Runner-Up Gold in the Job Interview Event. Pollock will now attend the National STAR Competition held in July at Anaheim, California. Natalie Lingenfelter received a silver medal in her Chapter Showcase Event.
As District 8 Adviser Mrs. Jacobsen ran the District Luncheon and Meeting congratulation the new state and peer officers, national officer candidates, and STAR event participants and winners. “Just Keep Leading” was the selected theme for the District 8 Leadership Conference to be held in October. Each chapter submitted ideas for keynote, small group, and roundtable presentations. District 8 Officer Elections and Meeting will be held May 4th at 4:00 p.m. at Mary’s Café in Plainview.
During the closing session Plainview was recognized for the “Go Green” projects completed this year. Senior FCCLA Member Hollie Nelson organized the activities and collaborated with FFA chapter to complete the series of activities required to receive the “Go Green” Award.
