Lingenfelter and Bearinger Announced State Finalists at FCCLA Peer Conference
The Plainview FCCLA chapter attended the annual Peer Education Retreat held February 23-24th in Kearney, NE, which is organized and presented by the SPOT Officers. SPOT is the acronym for the three FCCLA State Peer Officer Teams (Families First, Student Body, and Financial Fitness) who serve throughout the year to educate other students. Plainview FCCLA President, Ashley Shaffer is the Student Body SPOT Historian. The theme of the retreat was "SPOT Here, SPOT There, SPOT Everywhere". Over 400 FCCLA members and Advisers from 50 schools across the state attended the event. Those attending from Plainview were Ashley Shaffer, Paige Bearinger, and Adviser Ronita Jacobsen.
During the opening session, Ashley Shaffer was introduced as the Historian of the Student Body State Peer Officer Team. She presented throughout the opening and closing sessions and worked with other team members to hold the Peer Education Breakout Session. During the opening ceremony Ashley assisted other Peer Team members with introducing the new Peer Team Finalists. Natalie Lingenfelter was introduced as a State Student Body Team Finalist and Paige Bearinger was introduced as a State Families First Team Finalist. Both were presented with certificates. During the FCCLA State Leadership Conference both will take a written test over their specific Peer Education Programs, give a 2-3 minute informational presentation on their peer program, and go through an interview process.
While Ashley spent Sunday late afternoon and night preparing for the conference, Bearinger attended Sunday pre-conference
session “Leadership”. Members gained information on positive leadership traits, team work skills, FCCLA state and national programs, and parliamentary procedure.
The Keynote speaker on Monday was Mike Smith who spoke to members about how to help the less fortunate and take action to leave their own legacy. FCCLA SPOT members arranged for three breakout sessions. SPOT officers provided their own session where they educated members about the peer education programs which focuses on aspects of family, finance, and health. Student Body Team organized a session focusing on fitness, which was held Britnie Olson, Zumba Instructor, from the Kearney YMCA. Families First Team arranged for Gary Shada to speak about Down Syndrome.
