Ten FCCLA Members recently attended the Fall Leadership Workshop in Kearney. This annual event was held on Monday, September 19, 2022, with nearly 600 student members, chapter advisers, and guests from over 70 chapters statewide attending the conference. Attending from Plainview were Marque Albin, Shayla Jacobsen, Brooke Forbes, Kaydance Maertins, Ashlyn Forbes, Kiley Richter, Anika Robinson, Kelsie Wingert, Callie Taylor, Callie Pulis, and Adviser Ronita Jacobsen.

The Nebraska FCCLA state theme for this year is ‘Blazing New Paths,’ which encourages members to take advantage of FCCLA experiences and opportunities. Students at the event heard from members of the Nebraska FCCLA State Officer Team and the State Peer Officer Teams learning about this year’s goals and outreach programs.

Opening Session Keynote Speaker Kent Julian energized and engaged students as he delivered his message of “E + R = O” Normal is Overrated. He began his message by explaining how “events” = “outcomes” is the excuse way for the vast majority of the world and how they live life. “Events” + “Response” = “Outcomes” is where we need to be.  Julian stated that the only thing you are 100% in control of is your response to life.  He said it is not the “stuff’ that happens to you in your life, but how you respond to the stuff that makes the difference in your life. You need to take your greatest adversity and then you turn it into your greatest advantage. Julian was able to share this insightful and memorable content in a way that connected with students.

“I learned that how you react to situations that happen to you will impact the outcome. A positive response to a negative event can lead to a positive outcome.” stated Shayla Jacobsen.

Following the keynote, members Ashlyn Forbes, Kiley Richter, Anika Robinson, Kelsie Wingert, Callie Taylor, and Callie Pulis participated in the New Member Track Schedule and Sessions.  Through this session they had the opportunity to learn about FCCLA and how they could start “Blazing New Paths” from Nebraska’s national Officer and Leadership Liaison!   Members reviewed competitive event and recognition opportunities, started on their journey of leadership development, and learned how to make the most out of their FCCLA experience.  They ended their track with the State Officer Team Networking Session.

Chapter Officers Marque Albin, Shayla Jacobsen, Brooke Forbes participated in the Chapter Leader Track.  They began by attending sessions related to their office and gaining knowledge and skills to become effective within it. Afternoon sessions had them rotating between sessions of their choice such as Community and School asset Mapping, Advocating for CTE, Financial Fitness, Tobacco Prevention Mini Grants, Big Red Programs, Define YOUR Path in FCCLA, Preparing to Blaze Your Future, Digging Deeper into National Programs. The officers were able to choose to end their day by attending a special session by the keynote speaker called “From DREAM to DO by Kent Julian or learn how to be Next Level Leader.

Members joined together for the closing session where the Plainview Chapter received a door prize of an FCCLA Blanket.  New member Ashlyn Forbes said, “I learned a lot today about FCCLA and its programs. There are so many opportunities.  The sessions were fun.”
