September 01, 2024

Three Plainview Educators Rising members and adviser Ronita Jacobsen joined ESUs 6 and 9 in their Pilot Program and Student Kickoff for Course I Introduction to Teaching as a Profession. The kickoff was held in Milford at Southeast Community College in the Welsh Center with close to 100 students attending from almost 20 schools. Members attending from Plainview were senior Shayla Jacobsen and juniors Trindan Ziems and Mallory Mauer. Member Emma Sauser was marching with the band at the state fair and unable to attend that day.

Students began the day with a welcome and a representative from each school giving an introduction.  Throughout the day students learned about Grow Your Own and Educators Rising. They also learned about assignments and projects that they would be doing throughout the course and in Educators Rising such as Job Interview, Project Visualize, and Interactive Bulletin Board.  A variety of activities had the students involved in different groups learning about each other and applying information learned in Module 1 of their curriculum. Modeling of different student callbacks were incorporated throughout the day along with lots of “whys” and “purposes”.

In the afternoon, students who had not yet enrolled in dual credit through Wayne State College were given the opportunity to do so along with joining Educators Rising. Students participated in “Campfire Activities” and learned more about other students in the program.  The day concluded with yet another activity involving teamwork and communication as students gathered for the “Ships and Sailors” activity.

In reflection about the day, Trindan Ziems said, “I liked that I was around other people that have the same aspirations as me.”  Shayla Jacobsen said, “I enjoyed all the activities we did. They were not only fun, but they were able to get us up, moving and energized while meeting new people. I can also take these activities back and use them in organization, events, and my future classroom.” “The campfire activity was my favorite activity,” Mallory said. “I could see myself using this or like to see this used in a classroom”.

This is the first year Introduction to Professional Education is being taught and it is a dual credit class through Wayne State College which will be accepted at other colleges throughout Nebraska.  Next semester, students will have the opportunity to take Human Development and Cognition for dual credit, which is Course II. This second course will involve observation hours within a classroom beyond what is expected in Course I.

Educators Rising is a career and technical student organization that helps ensure students interested in a career in education have the experience and skills they need to be ready for the classroom.  The mission of Educators Rising is to create a new generation of highly skilled educators by guiding. Young people on a path from high school through college and into their teaching careers.
