Educators Rising Attends Course I Kickoff
Plainview Educators Rising members, Landon Hergert and Ashlyn Forbes along with Teacher Leader Ronita Jacobsen attended the Course 1: Teaching as a Profession Student Kick-Off. Close to 100 students attended the kickoff from almost 20 schools along Educators Rising State Officers and State Adviser Chelsey Green, members of the State Board of Education and State Legislation, and Nebraska’s Teacher of the Year Lindsey Wilson from Bennington Middle School. Course developers Lynne Herr, Katie Soto and Shalee Lindsey from ESU 6 and 9 organized and led the event.
Katie Soto, ESU 9, welcomed students and led them through a variety of activities which had them engaged throughout the day as they learned about Grow Your Own and the Course I curriculum. Students also learned about projects that they would be completing throughout the course and in Educators Rising such as Exploring Education Careers, Job Interview, Project Visualize, and Interactive Bulletin Board. Different student callbacks were incorporated throughout the day along with lots of “whys” and “purposes”. Katie also incorporated and modeled teaching techniques such as Quiz Quiz Trade, 4 Corners, Round Robbin, 2 Truths and a lie, Response Card, and several more. Nebraska Teacher of the Lindsey Wilson from Bennington Middle School presented and captured students immediately with her hands on presentation style. Students were show how to spark curiosity in students with “I notice...I wonder?” and how to encourage inquiry-based thinking and learning. The day concluded with yet another activity involving teamwork and communication as students gathered for the “Ships and Sailors” activity.
Plainview High School continues to participate in Grow Your Own (GYO) as we work to meet the increasing teacher shortage across Nebraska as well as the United States. This is the second year for offering Introduction to Professional Education (EDU 150) as dual credit through Wayne State College, which will be accepted at other colleges throughout Nebraska through transfer credit. Next semester, students will have the opportunity to take Human Development and Cognition for dual credit (EDU 250), which is Course II. This second course will involve 20 observation hours within a classroom in addition to their classroom work. Students who complete both EDU 150 and EDU 250, are eligible to take Course III EDU 275 PK-12 Instruction Design which is also dual credit through Wayne State College. Lifespan Development, which has been part of Plainview curriculum for years, has an updated curriculum and was added as a dual credit option this year to students. This semester course is recommended to be taken before EDU 150.
