Golfers Win The West Holt Invite
JV Golfers Continue To Improve
On Saturday, April 30 the varsity traveled to Atkinson for the West Holt Invite. This is an invite that has teams that Plainview doesnât ordinarily meet up with from the west. Although not quite as windy as Fridayâs meet, the wind still blew hard. The coaches at the meet were impressed with the fact that Plainview golfers took the wind in stride and shot the scores that were expected of them. This was not true of most of the teams. Plainview won with a score of 317 while OâNeill who has been within 4 strokes shot a 349 for second place.
Mitchell Klooz won his second golf medal of the season with scores of 37-36. Klooz indicated that his swing has gotten very comfortable for him and with good playing conditions he should again attack the Plainview records. Sam Meuret picked up the silver medal when he posted a par round on the back. Sam Meuretâs front nine of 39 gave him a 75. Riley Meuret tied for third but lost the scorecard playoff. Riley Meuret had a front nine of 43 but came back with 39 as he conquered the 7th hole that gives him trouble. With a birdie on the back after posting a double on the front, this gave Meuret a three-stroke swing. Britton Hamm provided the last score for the team. After playing in Osmond on Friday, Hamm has confidence in his swing. Hamm posted a 39 on the front but three 3-putts and three penalty strokes pushed him to a 48 on the back. Hammâs 87 was still good enough to tie him for 10th place for the fourth medal for the team.
Bret Springer score was not used in the team scoring. Springer had trouble with the par 5s on the front for a 49. Two holes on the back kept Springer from scoring even lower as he improved with a 46.
Next tournament action for the Pirates will be the Stanton Invite. This will give Plainview competition against teams from the east not usually in their invites.
The reserve golf team continued a busy week with participation in the Osmond Invite that had been postponed twice. With winds gusting to 40 mph, it made golfing difficult. However, Matt Watson was able to post a 45 on the front and have a 50 on the back nine. This gave Watson the 8th place medal.
Britton Hamm, having missed a meet, was able to play in a reserve role to have more practice on his new swing. Hamm posted a 49 on the front but the wind didnât do him any favors on the back as he came in with 53. This was good enough to tie for the 20th place medal.
Corby Forbes was the other reserve golfer and he played good golf except for three holes on the front side for a 56. Forbes was on track for a good score on the back until hole #6. Forbes still posted an improvement with 50 on the back.
Since Plainview only had three golfers, they were unable to record a team score.
On Saturday, Matt Watson and Corby Forbes participated in the Pierce Invite that had larger schools than the Osmond Invite. Forbes continued to shoot steady golf and posted a 102. Watson was just behind with 103 as his scores varied more. This is the last tournament that they will play separately from the varsity. Both gained good experience playing in varsity meets. While neither was able to medal and it will only help them be better golfers.
