Red Cross Scholarships and Honor Cords Presented
Destiny Rickard, Rebecca Kment, and Caroline Akinnigbagbe have reach received the “Hope Begins with You” Red Cross Blood Drive Scholarship this year in the amounts of $250 for the work they have done in assisting with blood drives through the years. Each of them were essential in calling people to come and donate during each of the drives held at the high school along with setting up and taking down the day of the drive, preparing food, hanging up signs, and donating food items. Additionally, some were even able to donate blood at a few of the drives.
Scholarship awards are issued directly to colleges or educational institutions on behalf of the winning student during the student’s second semester. To be considered for this scholarship, students must be an active participant in several Red Cross blood drives throughout their high school career and should exhibit a leadership role in the coordination and recruitment of blood drives. The awards process considers most units recruited and most hours committed towards supporting the blood program. Financial need is also taken into consideration when making the final student selection.
Rickard, Kment, Akinnigbagbe along with Carissa Wacker were also recognized by the Red Cross with the Red Cross Honor Cord, which they will wear at graduation. The Red Cross honors graduating seniors for their work in organizing blood drives, recruiting donors, and donating blood. To qualify for the Red Cross Honor Cord, students must have either donated blood 4 times or they would have needed to have recruited at least 5 people to donate blood, and /or volunteered in at least 3 community blood drives during their junior and senior years by calling to recruit people to come to the drives. By giving so much of themselves to serve others, the students prove that they are focused on improving the world around them. With the red graduation cords, they are recognized for their willingness to help the community and encouraged to continue in the path of service and helpfulness for the rest of their lives. The Red Cord Honors Program represents more than just a student’s donation to give life; it also symbolizes their giving nature, and the potential they have to change the world for the better.
