All four FCCLA members competing in District 8 FCCLA STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Competition on January 29 at Wayne State College returned with gold medals and the title of District Champion. Each member will move forward to the state competition to be held in Lincoln, April 6-8, in conjunction with the FCCLA State Conference.

“I am very proud of these ladies! They have stepped out of their comfort zones this year and set high goals for themselves.  Hours and hours have gone into these projects and they are not done yet. Their goal is nationals!” stated Adviser Jacobsen.

Kaydance Martins, Brooke Forbes, and Shayla Jacobsen earned a gold medal and District Champion in their National Programs Event. In their team event, they completed a file folder of information, created a display board, and gave a 10-minute presentation.  Following the presentation, they were interviewed by the judges and answered questions over their project “Dangerous Driving: See It! Stop It!”.

Shayla Jacobsen also earned a gold medal and District Champion in Job Interview Level 3.  Dakotah Albin earned her first trip to state and gold medal by being named District Champion in Job Interview Level 3.

To compete in Job Interview, Albin and Jacobsen were required to develop a portfolio and participate in a formal job interview. The portfolio consisted of a job specification sheet, job application, cover letter, resume, letters of recommendation, examples of their ability to communicate in written form, examples of special skills related to the job, and essays explaining their career-related education and educational enhancement opportunities.  They then participated in an interview for the jobs which they applied for in their portfolios.  Albin applied for a waitress position and Jacobsen applied for a paraprofessional position. Through the interview process they were required to communicate a personal understanding of job requirements, use the portfolio to support her responses, and answer questions about the portfolio.

District STAR Assistants for the day from the Plainview Chapter were Kiley Richter, Jaden May, and Scarlet Torrey. Their assistance in setting up the rooms, answering questions, running scores, etc. was vital to the success of the day. An advantage for them was being able to see multiple different STAR projects and events throughout the day and gain ideas on future projects and insight on how to put projects together.  During the Awards Ceremony, Shayla Jacobsen, District 8 President, assisted in presenting the awards.

STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) recognize members for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.  STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through cooperative, individualized, and competitive activities. Competitive events promote the FCCLA Mission to focus on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader. Each event and activity are designed to help members develop specific lifetime skills in character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. Competitive events provide additional opportunities to showcase college and career-ready knowledge, skills, and abilities; promote the FCCLA chapter as an integral part of the Family and Consumer Sciences education program; and to connect with peers and the community.
