Jacobsen Qualifies for Nationals during State FCCLA Conference
“The Future Is Yours” was the FCCLA 2020-2021 State Leadership Conference theme. The conference was held virtually at the Plainview Public Library April 12-13, where members viewed live and recorded sessions. Ten members from the chapter attended the conference: Crystal Hintz, Jessica Booth, Peace Akinnigbagbe, Devon Tunender, Leighton Medina, Logan Jacobsen, Marlena Curtiss, Shayla Jacobsen, Baili Prewitt, and Brooke Forbes attended, along with adviser Ronita Jacobsen.
State STAR Competition was held virtually this year in March with results shared during the conference. Shayla Jacobsen received first place in her Repurpose Redesign Project and earned a trophy and gold medal. Her finish qualified here for National FCCLA STAR Competition. National Competition will also be held virtually this year instead of in person at Nashville, TN. Jacobsen’s project was titled “Shutter Nightstand” as she took old shutters from her grandparent’s house and repurposed them into a nightstand. For competition, she presented her project, created a display board of her work, and gave a 5-minute presentation of how she created the nightstand and used a variety of recycled products to do so.
The Plainview Chapter was recognized for Feed Nebraska for the work they did in gathering donated food for our local food pantry in October. Adviser Ronita Jacobsen was recognized as a member of the FCCLA Board of Directors.
Keynote Speaker for the conference was Molly Kennedy. She is an award-winning, international resilience speaker and author of Creating the Champion Within. Molly has spent the past 24 years empowering others to Get UP When Life Knocks Them Down. Her presentation empowered members to get Unstuck from any challenge or transition life throws at them. Members learned practical user-friendly strategies applicable to every aspect of life. The presentation left them inspired to believe in themselves and to create the champion within them.
Students were able to view several breakout sessions: Dude, I’m Awesome by Molly Kennedy, Youth Leadership to Prevent Underage Drinking by Project Extra Mile, Red Flag Relationships by Jana’s Campaign, and Leading to Prevent Teen Dating Violence by Jana’s Campaign. Member’s favorite sessions were the one’s by Jana’s Campaign.
“I am glad students were able to have state conference and competition this year even though it was virtual. The students were able to view several live and pre-recorded sessions. Award sessions were held live and recorded this year too. Students appreciated getting the recognition they deserve for the work they put into their projects.” stated adviser Ronita Jacobsen.
